Phuket Issues Warning to Mafia's..15 Days to Get Out of Town...

From the Phuket Gazette is the story of government officials giving all mafia operating in Phuket 15 days to stop their evil thieving and scamming ways or else. Specifically the government is going to target the illegal taxi mafia’s and foreigners using Thai’s to illegally own businesses. Russians in particular have been identified as a target group who hire Thai’s to run restaurants, souvenir shops and beach-bed rental services that exploit tourists.

The government will set up an Organized Crime Center for Tourism at Phukets International Airport within 15 days. After August 9th they will receive and investigate any complaints about operators extorting money from tourists including over charging taxi fares, money laundering and other criminal activity. The office will be open 24 hours and staffed by police.

The next step? Plans to open a similar center and crackdown in Pattaya!!

Commentary: If this works then things are about to get very interesting in Phuket! And then they’ll do the same thing in Pattaya! Now that’s where the rubber meets the road. Could this be the beginning of the end of the illegally operated Russian businesses in Phuket and then Pattaya? Or could it end up spinning out of control with bribes and unsolved “accidents?”
