Military Takes on Taxi Mafia in Pattaya..

From Pattaya Daily News is the story of the Thai military taking on the motorbike taxi mafia in Pattaya. The new motorbike taxi fares will be a fixed rate of 25 Baht for the first 2 kilometers and a 5 Baht increase for the next kilometer. If the distance is more than 5 kilometers the fare will be negotiated and agreed by the passenger. Motorbike taxi drivers that break the fare rule can be charged a fine up to 5,000 Baht and their taxi permit withheld for up to 6 months. The motorbike taxi drivers are to register for their licenses by July 15th.

Commentary: That’s great news! But by the end of July I want someone to report back what the motorbike taxis are charging from Soi 6 to Walking Street. They wouldn’t take less than 40 Baht during Songkran and from Walking Street to Soi 6 at 3:00 a.m. they wanted 60 Baht.
