Australians Offer Phuket Police 140,000 Baht Bribe…

From the Phuket Gazette is the story of 2 Australian men in their 20’s that were given stern lectures by police for stealing jerseys from a shop on Bangla Road in Phuket. The shop keeper later saw the 2 tourists on the beach in Patong and notified police. Once apprehended the men confessed and apparently one of them offered the police a bribe of 140,000 Baht in cash to “forget the incident”. The police refused the bribe and also the crime letting them off the hook as police were sympathetic due to their youth.

Commentary: Hmmm….  Since when have a shop keeper and police just forgotten about a theft by foreigners in Thailand especially as it would appear from the photo that they didn’t just grab one jersey but several!  Perhaps the shop keeper got a premium paid for some sports jerseys a bit later that day?
