Greek Tourist Rescued Off Larn Island Cliff….

From Pattaya One News we have the story of a 37 year old Greek tourist who decided it would be adventurous to climb up a 400 meter rock cliff face on Samaer Beach on Larn Island. Unfortunately when the tourist got half way up he apparently couldn’t figure out how to continue climbing up or safely go back down. Rescue services were called but they determined a rescue was too dangerous. They in turn called on a Thai Navy rescue team that used a rescue helicopter to lower a rope to the tourist and winch him up to safety.

Commentary: I’ve done a bit of rock free climbing when I was younger and looking at the photo’s it would appear that the rocks provided plenty of hand holds. My guess is the tourist either got fatigued climbing in the heat and humidity or looked down when he was half way up and froze in place. In either case climbing a 400 meter rock cliff is not something I’d recommend your average tourist with no rock climbing experience try to do for fun. Not unless you want to risk splattering your brains on the rocks and beach below!
