Pakistani Steals from Safe Deposit Boxes in Patong..

From the Phuket Gazette is the story of a Pakistani man that was caught on CCTV stealing foreign currency from 9 safe deposit boxes located in the reception area of the Alfresco Phuket Hotel located on Sai Kor Road in Patong.

Apparently the resort had no night security or staff watching the front desk. The Pakistani man then stole the keys to 9 rooms and matched them to the safe deposit boxes of the tourists rooms cleaning them out of Australian dollars, Euro’s Indonesian rupiah and Turkish lira worth an estimated 200,000 Baht. It wasn’t until the next day that tourists discovered the thefts and reported it to the police.

Using the CCTV images police sent out alerts via a phone app to other police in Thailand. The Pakistani was tracked from Phuket to Bangkok and then to a room in Haad Yai in southern Thailand.

Commentary: Has anyone else noticed how often reception area safe deposit boxes seem to get cleaned out in Patong hotels? As for the hotel I can’t believe that for once they actually had a working CCTV system! Of course it doesn’t say much that there was no security or staff working the reception area does it? Remind me not to book a room there. As for the thief I just have one bit of advice: “The next time you decide to rob the safe deposit boxes from a hotel reception area you might want to take the time to turn off the CCTV system first!” Asshole!
