Bangkok Tuk-Tuk, Gem & Restaurant Swindlers Arrested..

From The Bangkok Post I read this story from May 21st where police have cracked down and arrested 22 Tuk-Tuk, gem and restaurant swindlers accused of luring foreign tourists to jewelry shops, restaurants and even tailors in return for commissions as high as 30%.

The gang was made up of Tuk-Tuk drivers and their associates. They hung out at the entrance gates of places like the Grand Palace. They would approach tourists, particularly those travelling alone, and give false information about the historic temples in the areas being closed because of religious activities, Pol Gen Somyot said. They would then use pressure tactics to persuade the tourists to visit other venues such as jewelry shops, restaurants and tailor shops that offer them special fees for bring in customers.

Police cited the case of Chinese tourists who were recently lured to a seafood restaurant and had to pay an exorbitant food bill.

Commentary:  It’s about time they cracked down on these scammers. I had this happen to me one night in Bangkok a couple of years ago and I had to make a leap out the speeding Tuk-Tuk to make good my escape like a scene out of a Mission Impossible movie!
